Huehuetenango is one of Guatemala's great coffee growing municipalities. The name, which was adopted by the invading and utterly brutal Spanish Conquistadors, means place of the ancients in Nahuatl. The original name given by the Mayan Mam peoples was Xinabahul, meaning place between the valleys.
