Gatomboya is a Kikuyu word meaning “swamp," due to the swampy landscape in the low-lying areas below the hills. The Gatomboya Washing Station is part of the Barichu Co-operative Society. Gatomboya collects cherries from about 600 smallholders with an average of 0.4 hectares of coffee growing land. Their total production of the facility is about 350 tons of cherries per year. Nyeri, the region of Kenya containing Gatomboya, is known for producing coffees with some of the most intense, complex, and flavor-dense cup profiles in the world.
